Generally visits to Panama are trouble-free and the country is very safe when compared to other Central and South American countries, there are a few issues, however. The city of Colon and the districts of El Chorillo and Santa Ana in Panama City can prove dangerous – especially at night – so precautions are advised – take taxis, travel in groups etc. The only other areas in the country that travellers should be wary of are Darien and Kuna Yala near the Colombian border – there have been a number of kidnappings and murders in this region over the years and visitors should only travel to the region in a pre-arranged tour group, or with adequate escort. Otherwise these areas are best left alone, for now. Other problems come in the shape of drug traffickers passing themselves off as regular passenger boats, usually travelling up North to Colombia. Discretion is advised. Vaccination against typhoid, cholera and yellow fever may be required, though doctor’s advice should be taken before travelling. Water should be bought bottled or otherwise sterilised in rural areas.
