Roads in Panama are generally of a decent standard, and recent new highways have made travel times less and travelling itself far easier. Roads in rural areas are not guaranteed to be of a high standard, especially in mountainous regions. Bus services operate out of towns and cities and cover most of the country, even if they are quite slow and unreliable – even so, they are cheap and they get you there. Eventually. Taxi services are available through the country and fares are cheap. Rail services are generally run for tourists and cover a route from Panama City to Colon. Other services are either infrequent or non-existent. There are passenger boats available for hire, taking people a number of places. It should be noted, however, that a number of these services are merely fronts for drug trafficking operations. Internal flights are available to a number of destinations in the country, though services can prove infrequent.
